Coastal Foraging (Scotland) NEW
The coast…
With Gulls hovering in the sky, curlews and oystercatchers calling in the distance, and an ever-present salty breeze…the coast is a great place to be.
We will be offering a new course in 2025 on the SW coast of Scotland (in Dumfries & Galloway), an area where we have been running a number of our courses since 2006.
It’s a beautiful environment which offers many options for us. This 8 days course is fully focussed on the coast and shoreline, and we will be camping in a forest right next to it.
Most of our time will be spent exploring the coastline, foraging as we go for a wide variety of edibles ranging from specific plants, to shellfish and of course fish. Apart from foraging we will also be looking at animal tracks and signs on the mudflats at low tide.
Back at camp we will be gathering wood and arranging our fires for cooking, grilling, steaming and smoking our catch. The tide table will dictate our schedule for the day.
What does it take to participate?
You will need a good/extensive level of outdoor camping experience.
For the entire course you need to be able to be self sufficient: preparing your own meals in your own little camp. If you have little experience with cooking on a fire, be sure to bring a burner stove.
What equipment do I need?
After registration you will receive an extensive packing list. In addition to general camping equipment, you won’t need many special items.
Do I need prior knowledge?
Not in terms of the lessons, but you must be able to be completely self-sufficient this week in any type of weather. Don’t overestimate yourself.
What about physical fitness?
The coastal area is rough and can be challenging. Same goes for the weather. A good level of physical fitness is needed for sure.
~
Right before this course, there is the option to participate in our Trapper course which takes place at the same location.
